Robert Wendell BROWN was born on March 5, 1925 in Butler County, Kansas.
Volunteer on June 9, 1943, Robert BROWN was sent to Europe with the 460th Parachute Field Artillery Battalion. Unit attached to the 517th American Parachute Regiment.
He took part in the Italian campaign and the operation Dragoon. He was dropped with his battery between La Motte and Trans en Provence on the Dropping Zone "A".
His unit in support of the 517th Parachute Infantry Regiment will went up towards the Alpes-Maritimes along the italian border. His unit was located to l'Escarène, where he was killed on September 5, 1944, while his unit supports the advance of the infantry on the Col de Braus to Sospel.
That 5th of September , its 75mm howitzer was hidden under the railway bridge at the exit of L'Escarène on the road to Lucéram, fired his gun with his crew as soon as the German artillery in the direction of Touet de l'Escanène and Sospel. As the men and the howitzer advance to fire, he will be killed instantly by artillery fire from the mountains of the Col de Braus.
A commemorative plaque was placed in the presence of his brother-in-arms Joe BAIL by the municipality of L'Escarene and the Battle Braus association, presided by Nicolas and Julien ARNULF
Robert Wendell BROWN est né le 5 Mars 1925 à Butler County, dans le Kansas.
Engagé volontaire le 9 Juin 1943, Robert BROWN est envoyé en Europe au sein du 460th Parachute Field Artillery Battalion. Unité rattachée au 517ème régiment parachutiste Américain.
Il participe à la campagne d'Italie puis est parachuté entre la Motte et Trans en Provence sur la DZ "A". Son unité en soutien du 517th Parachute Infantry Regiment va ensuite remonter vers les Alpes-Maritimes jusqu'à l'Escarène, où il sera tué le 5 Septembre 1944, alors que son unité appuie l'avancée de l'infanterie sur le Col de Braus.
Ce 5 septembre, son canon est caché sous le pont de la voix ferrée à la sortie de l'Escarène sur la route de Lucéram. Il tire dés que l'artillerie Allemande en direction du Touet, de l'Escanène et de Sospel est en vue. Alors que les hommes et le canon s'avancent pour tirer, il sera tué sur le coup par un tir d'artillerie venant des montagnes du col de Braus.
Une plaque commémorative fut posée en présence de son frère d'arme Joe BAIL par la municipalité et l'association Battle Braus, présidée par Nicolas et Julien ARNULF
